Roadkill Cookery

Tonight we dined on rabbit, pheasant and duck!

From 2009-11-12 - Roadkill Cookery

Many thanks to those who provided the meat, without them we could not have done this. All the Scouts enjoyed the experience (and even our cooking) although the smell put a few off.

Sunday 8 November 2009

Bike Ride

Following the Remembrance Sunday Parade we went for a short bike ride on the local fells.

From 2009-11-08 - Bike ride

We started at Chipping and quickly climbed on the road before turning onto some off-road tracks. Everybody enjoyed the ride although we were all pretty wet at the end of it! The route was a little over 6 miles long.

This Thursday - Roadkill Cookery.

Thursday 5 November 2009

Remembrance Sunday Parade

Please meet at the British Legion at 9:45 for the parade. As usual we will walk around the town and then have a service at church. We're usually finished just after twelve.

Would all Scouts please ensure that they are wearing a clean, tidy uniform with clean shoes and don't forget your poppy!

After the parade we will be going for a short bike ride around Rivington. Details to follow.

Night Hike

Don't forget that next week we are not meeting on Thursday. Instead we will be meeting at 7pm on Friday night at the foot of Parlick.
Assuming not too many people turn up we will be able to provide transport back to Longridge (10.30 - 11.00pm ish). If  there are too many we will be looking for a volunteer parent to provide some more transport back and we will have to give you a call half an hour before we finish the walk. We will sort this out on the night.

Obviously don't forget to bring some food, a drink, suitable clothing, boots and a waterproof. If you cannot get there then please get in touch with Dave and we will do our best to help.

From 2009-10-30 - Night Hike

After a good start with promising weather the rain set in at the top of Fairsnape so we cut the hike a little short by returning via Parlick.

Wide Game - Beacon Fell

Don't forget that tonight we are meeting at Beacon Fell at the main visitor centre.
We will be playing a wide game and will be finished for 9.00pm. Don't forget to wear suitable clothing and bring a torch!

A good night was had by all - the weather was good and the stars came out. We played a new game - Foxes and Hounds.

Wednesday 7 October 2009

Thursday 8th.

As many of you were not at Scouts last week, we have decided to swap the next 2 meetings round. This week we will be pioneering and then next week we will be swimming. Details about this will be given out on Thursday night.

I will also need names of those Scout who wish to take part in the Crew Challenge next month. I need to book the teams in soon.

Monday 28 September 2009

Crew Challenge

This years Service Crew Challenge is coming up soon, it's on the 7th November at Beacon Fell. As usual teams of three Scouts will complete a range of bases around the fell finishing at Waddecar.

We are currently the reigning champions so lets do our best and make it two years in a row!

Letters will be handed out on Thursday, entry forms will need to be filled in soon.

Night Hike Postponed!

As mentioned on Thursday night we have unfortunately had to postpone this weeks planned night hike. We have brought forward the toffee night and moved the night hike to the end of the month.

See you Thursday!

Start of Summer

Last night's Rafting and Barbecue went well, it's a shame about the rain though! That's it until for now, we're back on 3rd September with Group Camp that weekend.

We're planning to run the Saturday as a survival skills day (and night, Scouts) with water activities on the Sunday.

See you then,

Mark

Update

Last week's swimming was cancelled due to none of the pools being available for public swimming. We will move this to the next programme.

Also this week's planned climbing is also postponed as we need to get the tents sorted for this weekend's camp.

See you at 7 for a 9.30 finish.

Baltic Stakes Race Night - 23rd May

A bit late notice for lots of responses I know, but just in case anyone is at a loose end on Saturday they might fancy a cheap night out? Tickets are only £2.00 and the last event (that 2nd Lea ran) was a really good night (and I’m not just making that up). It’s a race night in aid of the Explorer Belt expedition in August this year.

The basic idea is:

1. Buy a ticket, or several!? (see the numbers on the poster, or see me)
2. Get to St. Joseph’s Annexe (yes, it’s still open),
3. Buy a drink,
4. Have a bet on a horse (only £1.00),
5. Sit back, relax (as if), and cheer on your nag on the big screen,
6. Reap your reward, (or cry in your beer)
7. Have a laugh, safe in the knowledge it’s all for a good cause,
8. Repeat steps 3 – 7.

If people are worried, under 18’s are allowed, provided they’re accompanied by an adult.

Hopefully we might see some there? Thanks very much, in advance.

Mackie. (District Explorer Scout Leader)

Cooking Methods

This week we are meeting at the Scout Hut but will be going to Waddecar - so we will only be finishing at 9.30pm.

Our plan is for the Scouts to make a good cooking fire as soon as we get there and we will then demonstrate a variety of different cooking methods.

I have found this site with some resources that may be useful.

We cooked a few Scouting favourites tonight, egg in orange and potato, fish
- cooked in newspaper and on a reflector, banana.

Next week, the Scouts are to choose their own food and cook it using any
method they like as long as it does not use pans!

Fires, Firelighting and Types of Wood

This week we will learn about the different types of fire, how best to light them and what types of wood are best for the job.

Well done to those who got fires lit, remember next week we will be cooking on the fire so we must double the speed!

Over the rest of the programme we will spend more time on this subject.

Tuesday 5 May 2009

First Aid & Safety

This week we will cover basic first aid, hypothermia and emergency signalling and rescue.

Thursday 30 April 2009

Axe and Saw

This term we intend to work towards a couple of badges, firstly the survival skills badge.
As a start we decided to work through the safety rules for the use of axes and saws. We also covered a little on maintenance. For a handy reminder click here for a fact sheet.

It is important that all Scouts take safety seriously.

Friday 3 April 2009

9th April - Night Hike

We will be having a short hike next week, meet as normal at the Scout hut. We will be returning around 10.30. Please wear suitable clothing and bring a torch. Dave will be sending out a letter at the weekend.

Photos Here

2nd April

Last night we challenged the Scouts to reach the top of the Scout hut to retrieve a cloth marker. Both teams eventually made a rope ladder.

Monday 23 March 2009

March Camp

This week we will be preparing for camp at GT.

You will all be given a "permission to camp" form which must be given to Dave as soon as you arrive at camp. For directions of how to get to GT click this link.

Change of Plan
We will now be providing transport. We will be leaving from the Scout hut at 7.30 Friday. You must bring your form!

Thursday 19 March 2009

19th March meeting

Unfortunately the planned trip to the Swimming Pool has had to be postponed due to a lack of transport. We will have to slot this into our next programme

Monday 9 March 2009

Trip to the Fire Station

This week we're visiting the Fire Station in Preston.
We will be leaving the Scout Hut at 6.30 and returning at 8.30.

Six Scouts and a new arrival from Cubs, Oliver, went on the visit. Firefighters Gary and Colin showed us around the fire station and also the pump. They explained about their jobs and also how they could use the different equipment in a wide variety of situations.

Many thanks to the firefighters for showing us around.

Tuesday 3 March 2009

Morse Code

This week we are planning to use Morse code to send a message. The idea is to play "chinese whispers" but with torches. Click the link for our worksheet. Morse Code.doc

The three teams did quite well with their tasks but it did take a few attempts to pass on the messages. Once they had decided to slow down the messages became much clearer.

Thursday 19 February 2009

Cinema Visit

8 Scouts attended this week, we went to see "Bolt" at Longridge Cinema - No Popcorn! The film finished around 9.30 an the Scouts were then collected by their parents.

Thursday 12 February 2009

Golfing

5 Scouts had a great time at the driving range - Thanks to Craig the pro for all his help.

Thursday 5 February 2009

Wide Game - Beacon Fell

We had a joint activity tonight with the Explorers. We met on the fell at the main car park and then split into two teams. We deliberately mixed the Scouts and Explorers.
The game played was "postman". One leader wandered around the fell with some letters and another with a stamp. The teams had to collect as many letters as they could, get them stamped and then deliver them back to the car park. The winning team was the one with the most letters delivered.
All went well and then after the game we had a short walk to the summit.

Thursday 29 January 2009

Cooking

Tonight we gave the Scouts a simple meal to cook. We provided all the ingredients and each of the three teams produced a different recipe. To tie in with the Chinese New Year we gave them Chinese meals to cook.
All the food tasted good and the Scouts managed to clean up quite quickly (for once). They also learn about food hygiene, teamwork and the use of different types of stove.

Thursday 22 January 2009

Navigation

Tonight we set off in three cars and the Scouts had to navigate from a route plan. Two teams managed quite well although my Scouts managed to go the wrong way around the course!
They all found out how difficult it can be to find your way along unfamiliar roads with unfamiliar maps.

Monday 19 January 2009

Winter Challenge Camp

A first for Waddecar was a winter challenge camp. Five of our Scouts joined in with Scouts from around the county camping under canvas and taking part in a series of challenges.

On Saturday the bases were held at Waddecar and included canoeing, caving, fires, cooking etc. The evening meal was provided and then the day finished with a camp fire.
Sunday involved a "treasure hunt" around Beacon Fell.

We didn't manage to win this time but the Scouts certainly had fun. (isn't that what it's all about?)
